But the star of the show, if you ask me, is an Austrian bass named Manfred Hemm, who brings Papageno the bird-catcher to life. There aren't many opera singers that can walk around in spandex tights and look as though it's natural and comfortable, but he does. Add to that a feathered tunic and a cap with a bird's beak for a bill, and you have a Papageno who steals many a scene with his humor. Hemm is a superb comic actor whether singing or speaking, and he even dances with exuberance when he finishes one of his humorous yet tuneful arias. Papageno is the main source of laughter in The Magic Flute, a character who is as lovable as he is laughable, and Manfred Hemm is simply perfect in the part"
